SierraLeone, represented by the Honourable Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs. Melrose Karminty, made a strong statement on the global stage by endorsing the Amman-Berlin Declaration at the Global Disability Summit 2025 in Berlin, Germany. The summit, focused on advancing the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) within development policy, saw Sierra Leone join a select group of nations committed to prioritizing disability inclusion in international development programs.

The Amman-Berlin Declaration signifies a commitment to ensure that at least 15 percent of international development programs actively prioritize disability inclusion, aiming to accelerate global efforts towards a more equitable and accessible world for persons with disabilities.

In her opening address to the summit, Honourable Minister Karminty conveyed the steadfast commitment of His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Rtd. Brigadier Dr. Julius Maada Bio for President 2023 to promote disability inclusion. She highlighted the government’s ongoing initiatives, including the flagship Free Quality Education and Radical Inclusion policies, designed to empower all vulnerable populations, including persons with disabilities.

Minister Karminty emphasized that Sierra Leone’s endorsement of the Amman-Berlin Declaration is a natural progression of its long-standing dedication to disability rights. She cited the country’s ratification of the UNCRPD and the subsequent domestication through the Persons with Disabilities Act of 2011, which is currently undergoing review to further enhance services for persons with disabilities. The Minister also underscored the government’s efforts to ensure that climate change initiatives are inclusive and benefit persons with disabilities in Sierra Leone.

Notably, Sierra Leone was among the leading nations out of over 100 nations that endorsed the Amman-Berlin declaration in Berlin. The ministerโs powerful statement and call for international partners to support Sierra Leone in achieving the goals of the declaration were met with enthusiastic applause from the distinguished audience.

Sierra Leone’s proactive participation and endorsement of the Amman-Berlin Declaration at the Global Disability Summit 2025 underscores the nation’s commitment to fostering a society where persons with disabilities are fully included and empowered in all aspects of development.
