The National Revenue Authority (NRA) recently welcomed the new British High Commissioner on a courtesy visit aimed at strengthening bilateral collaboration and reinforcing support for Sierra Leone’s national development agenda.
During the engagement, the British High Commissioner, Ms Josephine Gauld, emphasized that the United Kingdom remains aligned with the strategic frameworks of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, particularly in relation to public financial management. She commended the ongoing coordination between the NRA and its Board, and expressed optimism about the Authority’s institutional trajectory.
The Commissioner General of the NRA, Mrs. Jeneba J. Bangura reassured the High Commissioner, that the institution is firmly on course to meet its mid-year revenue targets. She further reiterated that with continued momentum and stakeholder collaboration, the Authority is committed to achieving its year-end goals.
As part of efforts to enhance data-driven revenue administration, Madam Bangura highlighted the role of the FCDO-funded Data Warehouse Project, which is designed to improve compliance and risk management practices. Importantly, these reforms are being implemented without the introduction of any new taxes.
On the customs front, she mentioned that the Authority continues to demonstrate its commitment to combating illicit trade. Madam Bangura also cited that the recent operation led to the successful interception of a container transporting kush, underscoring the NRA’s proactive enforcement measures at customs borders. Furthermore, she mentioned that the ongoing initiatives are aimed at shifting institutional mindsets and enhancing service delivery for more efficient border management.
This visit marks a renewed chapter in the longstanding partnership between the United Kingdom and the NRA. As the Authority accelerates its modernization agenda, such engagements remain instrumental in building a transparent, accountable, and development-oriented revenue system.
