BRAC Sierra Leone Celebrates International Day of Play with High-Level Dialogue on Childhood Development

Freetown, Sierra Leone—June 11, 2025. BRAC Sierra Leone, in collaboration with its
partners, marked the second-ever International Day of Play with a dynamic discussion on the critical role of play in Early Childhood Development and Education. The event, held at the Barmoi Hotel, brought together stakeholders from government ministries, educational institutions, NGO partners, and key policymakers, including the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), Mrs. Emilia K. Gorgra.

Under the theme “Choose Play—Every Day,” participants explored how play-based learning shapes cognitive, social, and emotional growth in children. The Honourable Minister of MBSSE delivered the keynote address, reinforcing the government’s dedication to integrating play into early childhood education frameworks.
In her remarks, Deputy Minister Gorgra emphasized, “Play is not just a pastime; it is an essential tool for learning, creativity, and growth in the early years of a child’s life. The ministry reaffirms its strong commitment to foundational play-based learning and quality early childhood education as the bedrock of our national development.”

Play as a Catalyst for Holistic Development

The discussion highlighted research showing that play helps children develop critical social skills, emotional resilience, problem-solving abilities, and physical coordination. Through interactive activities, young learners explore their environment, stimulate creativity, and build communication skills vital for lifelong success.

Nationwide Celebrations at ECD Centers

Alongside the high-level dialogue, BRAC Sierra Leone also organized community engagements with parents and children across Early Childhood Development & Education (ECD&E) centers in Bo, Pujehun, Port Loko, and Kailahun districts. These events showcased playful learning activities, reinforcing the message that every child deserves the right to play.

As the world observes the second-ever International Day of Play, BRAC Sierra Leone and its partners continue to advocate for policies and programmes that prioritize playful learning as a fundamental right for every child in Sierra Leone.
