Judiciary of Sierra Leone Communications, CJ’s Conference Room, 9th September, 2025:* Sierra Leone’s Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda has encouraged the Human Rights Commission’s Directorate of Climate Change and Information Services to Intensify massive campaign on climate change.
The Honourable Chief Justice said the country is vulnerable to climate change, facing threats like sea level rise, flooding and sometimes with extreme heat that has even disrupted agriculture and food security with increasing coastal erosion.
Describing climate change as a growing national concern, he said there is an urgent need for stakeholders to come together to address issues of climate change.
“If climate change issues are not addressed, the environment will not be habitable for us,” said Honourable Chief Justice Komba Kamanda, while pledging his institution’s support.
“You have our support, and my door is always open.”
During today’s engagement with the Director of Climate Change and Information Services, Abu Bakar Kamara, and his team, the Chief Justice also pledged his commitment to support the forthcoming National Conference on Climate Change and Human Rights scheduled for the 28th and 29th October, 2025.
Explaining the importance of the conference, Director Abu Bakar Kamara said the conference will be organized by the Human Rights Commission with the aim of bringing together experts, policymakers, government MDAs, CSOs and community right holders to share knowledge and experiences on the human rights implications of climate change impacts.
He went on to state that the conference will discuss ways to build strong inter-ministrial partnerships and networks to address the climate change impacts on the enjoyment of human rights .
On behalf of the Human Rights Commission, he thanked and appreciated the Chief Justice for his support and commitment to climate change and human rights related issues.
