The handing over ceremony took place at the World Food Programme (WFP) Warehouse in Kissy Dock Yard, Freetown.
Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Wang Qing, highlighted China’s commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s pursuit of food security and economic development.
He noted that between 2018 and 2024, China provided approximately 10,600 metric tons of rice to aid smallholder farmers in boosting food production.
Ambassador Qing also referenced collaborative infrastructure projects, such as the National Stadium and the China-Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital, as symbols of the enduring partnership between the two nations.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the Sierra Leonean government, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, expressed gratitude for China’s generous contribution aimed at assisting vulnerable populations.
He announced that, following Cabinet allocation, 7,000 bags of rice would be directed to the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources to support registered artisanal fishing groups. The remaining rice is designated for the nationwide school feeding program, ensuring that children across Sierra Leone have access to nutritious meals.
Dr. Kpaka emphasized the longstanding relationship between Sierra Leone and China, spanning over five decades and encompassing various sectors beyond food assistance.
