Empowering Consumers: NRA Introduces New Excise Stamp Verification App Revolutionizing Tax Compliance

In an era where counterfeit goods pose a growing threat to public health and national revenue, the National Revenue Authority has taken a bold step forward with the introduction of a cutting-edge Excise Stamp Verification App called “CHECK AM”.
This innovative mobile application empowers consumers to instantly verify the authenticity of excisable goods, such as alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic sugar beverages like soft drinks and juice, tobacco products and bottled water, by simply scanning the excise stamp affixed to the product. By doing so, consumers will determine the authenticity of the product to protect themselves from potentially harmful counterfeit products, while supporting national efforts to curb tax evasion and illicit trade.

The “CHECK AM” App is designed to be user-friendly and accessible on all Smartphones and Apple phones. Once downloaded via Google Play Store or App Store, users can scan the excise stamps on various products using their Smartphone or Apple phone camera, and within seconds, the app will provide real-time information about the product, including its manufacturer, date of marking, and tax compliance status. If the product is verified as authentic, a user will see an instant status update indicating whether the excise stamp on the product is approved or rejected. If the stamp is invalid or unrecognized, the app will immediately alert the user and prompt him/her to report the suspicious item to the authorities.
This seamless verification process enhances consumer confidence and strengthens the government’s efforts to ensure only legitimate goods are circulated in the domestic marketplace.
Beyond consumer protection, this digital solution significantly boosts tax compliance and revenue collection. Counterfeit and tax-evading products will not only deprive the government of much-needed revenue for national development but also create unfair competition for legitimate businesses. By leveraging technology, the National Revenue Authority is tightening regulatory enforcement, reducing the probable prevalence of fake excise stamps, and ensuring that businesses adhere to the nation’s tax laws. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader digital transformation agenda, which seeks to enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability in tax administration.
As more consumers embrace the “CHECK AM” Verification App, its impact will be far-reaching. Public awareness campaigns and stakeholder engagement will be critical in encouraging widespread adoption and educating citizens on the dangers of counterfeit goods. Ultimately, this initiative represents a win-win scenario in which consumers will gain confidence in the products they purchase, legitimate businesses will thrive in a fair marketplace, and ultimately, the government will secure the revenue needed to fund and deliver on essential public services. With technology as a driving force, the fight against counterfeit goods and tax evasion has entered a new, more effective chapter for Sierra Leone.
