The Environment Protection Agency Sierra Leone has concluded stakeholders’ final review of key e-mobility policy documents to facilitate Sierra Leone’s transition to electric mobility.
Technical working groups conducted the review, which was overseen by the project steering committee and the Intersectoral Coordinating Body (ISCB) of the E-Mobility project. This body, comprises stakeholders from relevant government agencies and departments, civil society, and the private sector, that oversees the project’s implementation.
The documents encompass the Draft Import Regulation and Vehicle Registration for Electric Vehicles (EVs), the Draft Scheme for EV Battery Collection, Recycling, and Safe Disposal, the Renewable Energy (RE)-Based EV Charging Framework, the Gender-Sensitive National E-Mobility Strategy, and the Comprehensive Implementation Plan – Business Case and E-Mobility Targets.
They are essential for developing a robust, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable e-mobility ecosystem in Sierra Leone. The engagement assessed the inclusiveness of private investment, feasibility, and alignment of institutional mandates with the objectives of the E-Mobility project.
The review involved aligning mandates for effective intersectoral collaboration, gathering technical inputs, and establishing the modalities required for effective legislation and enforcement, thereby creating a unified approach to implement Sierra Leone’s transition to electric mobility.
The country’s electric mobility initiatives are pivotal in advancing urban mobility, decarbonisation, and energy transition goals, including our Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions levels to 7.58 million tonnes CO2e by 2035 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
