Lateness & Absenteeism…SPEAKER ANGRY

By Ayodele Deen Cole

Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, has raised serious concerns over the continued absenteeism and tardiness of Members of Parliament (MPs), describing it as a clear neglect of legislative responsibilities.
Addressing the issue during a recent sitting, the Speaker emphasized that many MPs habitually arrive late or fail to attend parliamentary sessions, frequently disrupting quorum and delaying key legislative proceedings.
“This issue is not new,” Hon. Segepoh said. “It has persisted for years. Something definitely has to be done. This didn’t start yesterday—it has been going on for over 15 years.”
The Speaker stressed the need for immediate intervention and called for an urgent meeting to consider punitive measures against habitual offenders. He noted that enforcing adherence to standard legislative procedures is essential to restoring order and ensuring Parliament functions effectively.
