Sierra Leone and Egypt Deepen Transport Ties in High-Level Bilateral Meeting, Tour Key Infrastructure Projects in Cairo

Cairo, Egypt – July 8, 2025 — Sierra Leone’s Minister of Transport and Aviation, Ambassador Col. (Rtd.) Alhaji Fanday Turay Esq., in collaboration with Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt, His Excellency Ambassador Sadik Sillah, led a high-level delegation to Egypt today for a bilateral meeting with H.E. General Kamel El-Wazir, Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Transport and Industry. The meeting took place at the minister’s new administrative headquarters in Cairo.

The visit underscores the deepening cooperation between the Republic of Sierra Leone and the Arab Republic of Egypt, particularly in the transport sector. In his remarks, Minister Turay conveyed appreciation on behalf of Sierra Leone’s President, Brigadier (Rtd.) Julius Maada Bio, for the warm reception and longstanding partnership between the two nations.

He highlighted the robust bilateral relations and ongoing collaboration in key transport areas such as aviation, shipping, roads, maritime, and port development. Minister Turay also emphasized the importance of existing Memoranda of Understanding that support mutual goals, including aviation training and port infrastructure development.

“This visit aims to strengthen our existing cooperation and forge new partnerships that align with our national priorities and broader African goals, such as Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA),” Turay stated.

In response, General El-Wazir welcomed the Sierra Leonean delegation and reiterated Egypt’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Sierra Leone. He praised the fruitful relationship between the two nations and expressed optimism about future joint initiatives.

The bilateral talks are expected to catalyze new agreements and technical cooperation that advance transport development and regional integration efforts.

Following the meeting, the Sierra Leonean delegation—working closely with Ambassador Sadik Sillah—was taken on a guided tour of key transport infrastructure within Egypt’s New Administrative Capital. The tour included a visit to the High-Speed Train Station, the Light Rail Transit Station with a ride to Adly Mansour Station, and a stop at the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Station on the Ring Road. The delegation also viewed newly constructed bridges implemented by the Hassan Allam Company, showcasing Egypt’s major advancements in modern transport infrastructure.
