Sierra Leone’s Energy Sector Lead, Alhaji Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella will officially launch the construction of a 1MW solar power plant at Njala University, Mokonde Campus, on May 29th, 2025.

Having grown up as a student of this prestigious institution, Dr. Yumkella vividly recalls the persistent energy challenges that hampered academic life. Driven by a long-held vision of creating an energy-secure learning environment, he has worked tirelessly to make sustainable energy accessible to institutions like Njala. During his tenure as Director-General of UNIDO, in addition to the successful Bankasoka hydro project, Dr. Yumkella also designed the Singima hydro project, aimed at electrifying Moyamba and parts of the Bo District.

This 1MW solar power project marks a transformative moment for Njala University. It will:
Provide reliable, clean electricity to power classrooms, laboratories, student residences, and administrative buildings—enhancing the quality of education, research, and campus life.
Reduce the university’s dependence on costly and polluting diesel generators, cutting operational costs and promoting environmental sustainability in line with Sierra Leone’s green development goals.
