In a vibrant tribute to the invaluable contributions of nurses, the medical unit under the Technical Services of the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA), led by Mr. Rogers was supervised by Director General Mr. Yankuba Askia Bio, celebrated World Nurses Week with the theme ” Our Nurses ,Our Future “. This year’s observance took place on May 12, 2025, within the port vicinity, culminating in a meaningful march from Up Gun down to the Port Hospital area.

The event aimed to raise public awareness about the crucial role nurses play in healthcare, particularly in the face of emerging health threats. Dr. Christella Scott, who spoke at the celebration, emphasized the importance of recognizing the risks that nurses take in their daily work, often putting themselves in harm’s way to care for others. She urged Sierra Leoneans to remain vigilant against the rising threat of monkey pox, a viral disease that has seen an increase in cases in the region.

Nurse Catherine Bio expressed heartfelt gratitude to the management for their support and commitment to making the occasion a success. “This celebration not only honors the hard work of nurses but also highlights the ongoing challenges we face in healthcare,” she noted, adding that such recognition fosters a spirit of appreciation and collaboration within the medical community.

The event featured various activities designed to engage both healthcare workers and the public, fostering a sense of unity and purpose. It underscored the essential services that nurses provide amidst challenging circumstances, reinforcing their critical role in safeguarding public health.
As World Nurses Week continues to gain recognition globally, Sierra Leone’s celebrations serve as a reminder of the dedication and sacrifices made by healthcare professionals. The SLPHA’s commitment to supporting its medical staff reflects an understanding that the strength of a health system lies in its people. Through such initiatives, the Authority not only recognizes the efforts of nurses but also champions a healthier future for all Sierra Leoneans.
