Today, on International Workers’ Day, I extend my heartfelt salute to the courageous and determined working men and women across Sierra Leone.
From the farmlands of Kailahun, Kenema, and Kambia to the mining communities of Kono, Tonkolili, and Port Loko; from the market stalls and classrooms of Freetown, Bo, and Makeni, to the rich cultural heartlands of Koindugu and Falaba — you are the lifeblood of our nation’s progress. Yet, let us speak frankly.
Too many of our workers remain underpaid, unprotected, and undervalued. Too many of our young people are desperately searching for jobs that simply do not exist. Too many families continue to struggle, working tirelessly day after day, only to face hardship and insecurity.
As someone who aspires to lead this great nation, I firmly believe that Sierra Leone’s future rests on the strength, dignity, and well-being of its workers.
That is why I am committed to forging a new social contract — one that places workers at the very centre of national development.
A contract based on the following pillars:
Decent jobs with fair wages and equal pay for equal work;
- Strategic investment in education, vocational training, and digital skills;
- Strong and independent labour unions, and the full protection of workers’ rights;
- Access to health insurance, pension security, and safe working conditions; and
- A national economy that places people above profit, and equity above exploitation.
My vision is simple: A Sierra Leone where hard work is honoured, not punished.
A nation where opportunity is not a privilege for a few, but a shared promise for all.
On this Workers’ Day, I stand in solidarity with you — the housekeepers, potters, nurses, drivers, teachers, miners, traders, doctors, lawyers, administrators and the youth. I pledge to be a leader who will champion your cause, uplift your voices, and place your hopes at the heart of national transformation. Together, let us rise – to heal, unite, and build Sierra Leone.
