โฆUse Of National Identification Number
In a move to strengthen financial transparency and enhance digital integration, all commercial banks across Sierra Leone have announced the immediate enforcement of a new policy requiring the use of a National Identification Number (NIN) for the opening and updating of individual accounts.
According to the directive, any new individual account must be opened with a valid NIN issued by the National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA). For business entities, a Tax Identification Number (TIN) provided by the National Revenue Authority (NRA) will be mandatory.
Existing customers are also required to comply. Banks have set a deadline of 31st December 2025 for all existing account holders to update their records with a valid NIN. Failure to do so could result in limited access to banking services.
Additionally, customers wishing to access the National Switch payment platform โa centralized electronic transaction systemโmust ensure their NIN is linked to their bank account no later than 31st August 2025.
This policy is part of a broader national effort to promote digital financial inclusion and improve identity verification processes in the banking sector. Bank officials are urging the public to act promptly to avoid disruptions in service.
